You don’t get both

You probably aren’t going to like this article. It’s exactly what you need to hear but most people will hate it. Or, you’ll think of people who really need to hear this but you won’t think it applies to you. It does. Until you do this one thing, you aren’t going to hit your fitness goals.

Take an honest look at yourself. If you aren’t in the shape you want to be, it’s because you’re lying to yourself. 98% of people lie to themselves about the kind of shape they’re in. Are you healthy? Do you feel like the person people see on the outside reflects the person you feel like on the inside? It’s time to get honest.

Everyone has a story about why they are who they are. Whether it’s fitness, business, life situation, whatever. We console ourselves about not being the person we feel like we should be by telling ourselves stories. You do this.

With regards to fitness and health, people say things like “I have a thyroid issue”, “my metabolism is bad”, “I eat less than other people and I still gain weight”, “I exercise like crazy but I don’t get results”. I could go on and on. These are all lies. Some of them are only partial lies but these statements are what stand between you and getting results.

A recent poll found that nearly half of people believe they have a thyroid issue that prevents them from losing weight. In reality, less than 2% of people have a thyroid issue that impacts their weight. Of those, over 70% of them can alleviate the problem by changing their lifestyle. Of the tiny percentage that are left, their thyroid problem causes them to carry an additional 5-10 pounds. If you are more than 5-10 pounds overweight, then even for that tiny fraction of people, their thyroid isn’t the key issue.

“I eat less than everyone else and I still gain weight”

Food is energy. Fat is stored energy. 1 pound of fat is approximately 3500 store calories. There is not another way to produce a pound of fat other than eating at least 3500 more calories than you burned. Moving your body takes energy. Using your brain uses energy. Keeping your body temperature in the right range takes energy. If you consume more energy than you are burning, your body will store it as fat. No matter what you tell yourself, I assure you, your body is not breaking the laws of physics. The real truth is that your lifestyle got you the body you have right now and changing your lifestyle will change it.

It’s time to let go of your story. Change your story to this, “Once I was willing to confront the truth and come to terms with the fact that I got myself out of shape and only I can fix the problem, I changed my life and got in the best shape of my life. Now, I look and feel better than ever and I am the healthiest I’ve ever been”. This can be your story but it is not compatible with your current story.

Step 1 towards getting the body you want is accepting that truth.

Here are the next steps:

- Learn how to eat healthy
- Be consistent about physical activity
- Continue being brutally honest with yourself about these two items. If you're not getting results, accept that it is your fault and YOU can change it
